Mechanics

Revelation is the third and final part of the FINAL FANTASY VII Remake series. Square Enix promises "a truly open planet" explored aboard the Highwind airship. You can choose where to skydive down into biomes, cities and remote areas.[1][2] Piko, your Chocobo, "grows alongside the party," learning new traversal and combat abilities, and a new grappling gun covers rooftops and vertical routes.[1]

Combat keeps the series' hybrid of real-time action and command-based Tactical Mode. It adds newly playable Cid and Vincent and the FITS system, which gives class abilities and outfits through the roles of Warrior, Knight, Black Mage and Summoner.[1][2] You can swap your controlled character and your whole party at any time while exploring.[1]

The most interesting design change for us: choosing which party members take on certain quests changes how events and scenarios unfold.[1] Analysis: this extends Rebirth's relationship-driven moments into a branching structure. It adds replay value and raises the stakes on who you bring along.

Tech

The Switch 2 version supports TV, tabletop and handheld modes and is an estimated 130.1 GB download, with Switch Online cloud saves.[2] Why that matters: a 130 GB game takes up a large share of Switch 2 storage, so plan on expandable storage if you buy digitally. Square Enix hasn't announced performance modes for any platform. The Switch 2 version is the one to watch in pre-launch coverage.

Carry-over bonuses: save data from Remake Intergrade and Rebirth unlocks Summoning Materia and weapon skins. Even without saves, they unlock when you finish the main game.[2]

Business

Square Enix announced Revelation as releasing simultaneously on all platforms.[3] That's a clear break from the trilogy's history, since Remake and Rebirth both debuted on PlayStation first. A same-day launch on PS5, Xbox, PC and Switch 2 is the clearest sign yet that the publisher is going multiplatform with its biggest releases.

Editions: Standard is $69.99. The digital Premium ($99.99) adds a Story Expansion Pass with two story DLCs, one featuring Sephiroth and one featuring Vincent and the Turks, plus 24-hour early access. Premium Plus is $109.99. There's a physical Deluxe ($99.99) and a $349.99 Collector's Edition, exclusive to the Square Enix Store, with a Cloud, Zack and Sephiroth statue.[1] Story DLC announced before launch tells us the post-launch revenue plan is already set.

Timing: April 8 is one day after Exodus (April 7). Both are big single-player RPGs fighting for the same players' time.

Player impact

  • Which platform? Until performance details land, PS5 and PC are the safe picks. Switch 2 is the portable option, but budget for storage.
  • New to the trilogy? Catch up on Remake and Rebirth first. This is a finale.
  • Premium vs Standard: buy Premium only if you're sure you want both story DLCs. The 24-hour head start is a small extra.

Long-term outlook

A strong simultaneous launch would set the standard for how Japanese AAA flagships release from now on: everywhere, day one, Switch 2 included. It's also a key test of whether Switch 2 can carry full-size AAA ports at launch parity.

Open questions

  • Performance and resolution modes on each platform.
  • Release timing and price for the story DLC.
  • How much the party-based quest choices change the main story.
