Mechanics

4A describes Metro 2039 as "first and foremost a solo, story-driven FPS." You play The Stranger, a former Spartan with a dark past who returns to a Metro he never wanted to see again. The State of Play demo has him crossing the thawing surface of Moscow toward a Novoreich fortress built inside a dam.[1]

The series' survival loop is intact: managing radiation and equipment, choosing between stealth and aggression. The demo showed a chargeable Shatun rifle for silenced headshots, Molotovs for clearing rooms and a Duplet shotgun.[1] The Xbox Showcase trailer covered wildlands, irradiated streets, station communities and deep tunnels, with "new mutant variants" and "new ways to explore."[4]

Analysis: a protagonist framed as "far worse" than a hero, after Artyom's arc, points to more morally pointed storytelling. That fits the Metro series' history of tying endings to player behavior, but 4A has not yet confirmed how choices work in this game.

Tech

Metro 2039 runs on 4A's proprietary 4A Engine and is "the first game in the series to be built from the ground-up for ray tracing."[2] 4A has history here: Metro Exodus Enhanced Edition was one of the first games with 60fps ray tracing on PS5.[1]

The confirmed console promise is a Performance Mode with ray tracing at 60fps on PS5, PS5 Pro and Xbox Series X at launch. The press release puts it at "4K, 60FPS," and the first console footage was captured on PS5 Pro.[2][3] Note that Xbox Series S is not named in the 60fps promise. Full specs and modes are still to come.[2]

Why it matters: designing around ray tracing (rather than adding it on later) lets a studio rely on ray-traced lighting for gameplay readability in dark spaces, which Metro has plenty of. PC players should watch whether minimum specs require RT-capable GPUs. 4A hasn't said.

Business

Metro 2039 is a premium, single-player release launching simultaneously on all platforms, with a Collector's Edition built around a wearable replica Spartan helmet.[3][5] It won "Best Visuals" at the Gamescom awards and collected more nominations than any other title at the show, which is strong pre-launch visibility for a mid-sized publisher.[3]

Studio context matters. 4A was founded in Kyiv, is now headquartered in Malta, and still has most of its 200+ person team in Ukraine. The game is being developed during Russia's full-scale invasion.[3] Delivering a technically ambitious AAA-adjacent game under those conditions is part of the story. Metro Exodus joining the PlayStation Plus Extra catalog is a classic catalog play to bring in new players before launch.[3]

Timing risk: it ships 12 days before God of War Laufey and 19 days before Fable, in a very crowded February.

Player impact

  • Best version (on paper): PS5 Pro, Series X or a strong RT-capable PC for 60fps with ray tracing. Series S owners should wait for confirmed modes.
  • Catch up first: Metro Exodus is in PS Plus Extra, so you can get up to speed cheaply.[3]
  • Pre-order? No reason to before mode and spec details land. Wishlist instead.

Long-term outlook

If 4A hits 60fps with ray tracing on base PS5, that's evidence that RT-first rendering is viable this console generation and not something to save for the next one. It's also a reference point for what Project Helix's promised "order of magnitude leap in ray tracing" needs to beat.[6]

Open questions

  • Series S target resolution and frame rate.
  • PC minimum specs and whether RT hardware is required.
  • How player choice affects the story and ending.
