Key facts

Mechanics
Legacy of Atlantis is a full reimagining of Lara Croft's 1996 debut: the hunt for the scattered pieces of the Scion across Peru, Greece, Egypt and "a mysterious island shrouded in myth."[1][2] The official feature list covers climbing, leaping and swinging with a grappling hook, puzzles built on water flow, light beams, pressure plates and symbols, and combat with the dual pistols plus unlockable weapons against wildlife, mercenaries and mythological creatures.[2]
The biggest structural change is level design. In Peru's Lost Valley, the puzzles were "rebuilt from the ground up," and rooms that were self-contained in 1996 "have opened into semi-connected environments you can traverse and approach from new angles." Set pieces like the cog puzzle and the T-Rex fight return in reworked form.[1][3] Amazon also says the story is expanded "with deeper connections that bridge Lara Croft's defining adventure to her future."[2]
Our read: connected spaces and multiple approaches are the modern answer to the original's grid-based rooms. The test is whether the new design keeps the 1996 game's feeling of being alone and figuring things out, rather than filling it with prompts.
Tech
It runs on Unreal Engine 5.[1] No resolution or frame-rate targets have been published. Nintendo says the Switch 2 version is "fully optimized" and launches the same day.[3] Why it matters: a same-day UE5 release on Switch 2 is a meaningful test of how far the hardware can scale a current-gen engine; expect a lower-resolution, upscaled version, and look for Digital Foundry-style comparisons near launch.
Localization is broad: full audio and text in English, French, German, Latin American Spanish, Brazilian Portuguese, Polish and Simplified Chinese, plus text-only in five more languages.[2] Alix Wilton Regan voices Lara.[4]
Business
Amazon announced two Tomb Raider games at The Game Awards 2025: Legacy of Atlantis for 2026 and Tomb Raider: Catalyst, a new adventure in Northern India, for 2027.[4] Both have since slipped. Legacy of Atlantis moved to February 12, 2027 and added Switch 2.[5] Amazon Gaming's Jeffrey Gattis has said the next game follows in 2028, according to PC Gamer, which also reports that Crystal Dynamics went through its fourth round of layoffs in 12 months in March 2026.[6]
The development split matters: Legacy of Atlantis is a co-production with Flying Wild Hog, the Polish studio behind Shadow Warrior.[4] Strategy read: outsourcing much of the remake lets Crystal Dynamics keep its core team on Catalyst, and the remake gives Amazon a lower-risk release that reintroduces Lara before the bigger new game.
Editions: Standard ($59.99) with a Survivor Outfit pre-order bonus; Deluxe ($69.99) adds 48-hour early access, the Parisian Fugitive Outfit and a post-launch DLC story pack; the $199.99 Collector's Edition adds a steel case, a Lara vs. T-Rex statue, a mini art book, a pin and a keychain.[1][5] A free Mediterranean Wetsuit outfit is available at launch.[2]
Player impact
- Price: $59.99 Standard is below the $69.99 norm for big releases; that's the value pitch.[5]
- Deluxe: only worth it if you want to play two days early or are sure you'll want the story DLC.[1]
- Which platform? PS5, Xbox or PC for the best version until performance details arrive; Switch 2 for portability.
- Played the original? Expect familiar moments in new layouts, not a shot-for-shot remake.[3]
Long-term outlook
A strong launch would set up Catalyst and validate Amazon's plan of a remake first, then a big new game. A weak one would add pressure to a studio that has been through repeated layoffs. The bridge to "Lara's future" in the story suggests Amazon wants the remake to serve as an entry point for the new timeline rather than a standalone nostalgia piece.[2]
Open questions
- Performance modes on each platform, especially Switch 2.
- What the post-launch DLC story pack contains.
- Does Amazon confirm Catalyst's new date?
- Is there a "classic" tank-control or camera option for purists?
