Mechanics
Until Dawn 2 is a standalone sequel with a new cast: the crew behind Dead True, a popular paranormal YouTube channel whose scares are, as Firesprite puts it, "a little staged." A TV network deal sends them to Akishima Island, a South Pacific resort abandoned since a mysterious 1970s shutdown, where the horror is real.[1][2] Peter Stormare returns as Dr. Hill.[1]
The series' core rule survives: your choices decide who lives. The new emphasis is relationships. Firesprite says "how you manage relationships within the crew matters more than ever, with some branches based on where things stand between characters," and small moments can still trigger the Butterfly Effect.[1] Example decisions from the reveal and pre-order trailer: risk injury to free a baby boar from a bear trap; follow a signal to a missing friend or detour to a suspiciously lively bar; and whether to sacrifice the crew's chicken on camera because the network demands it.[1][2]
Our read: moving from single moments of choice to relationship state is the same direction Supermassive has explored since. It makes the cast's chemistry a system rather than just flavor, and gives more reason to replay.
Tech
Sony hasn't announced resolution, frame-rate or PS5 Pro details. The PlayStation Store lists the game as single-player with Remote Play support and an accessibility features section.[3] This is Firesprite's first release since Horizon Call of the Mountain (PS VR2), made with Guerrilla.[1] Why it matters: Call of the Mountain was praised for its visuals, so expect a strong-looking game. Cinematic horror with a fixed or tightly framed camera usually favors image quality over high frame rates, so look for whether a 60fps mode is offered.
Business
The development setup is the story. The 2015 original was made by Supermassive Games, and the 2024 remake by Ballistic Moon. The sequel goes to Sony-owned Firesprite, with narrative help from AdHoc Studio, the team behind the acclaimed choice-driven game Dispatch.[2] Strategy read: Sony is treating Until Dawn as a first-party franchise it can move between teams, and it's borrowing proven narrative talent instead of building it in-house.
Editions: Standard and Digital Deluxe, with pre-orders from September 10, 2026. Pre-order bonuses are Dr. Hill-themed: an Until Dawn classic outfit, an Akishima Island holiday outfit and in-game Dr. Hill bobbleheads. The Deluxe adds the "Y2K Neon Vibes" costume pack for all eight cast members and "Diorama of Death," vignettes that replay each fatal outcome from new angles.[2] That last item is clever: it turns the deaths themselves into a collectible, which encourages completionists to replay.
Timing: it launches the same day as Metroid Ravenous (January 28), but the audiences barely overlap.
Player impact
- Platform: PS5 only for now; it is labeled a PlayStation Exclusive.[3]
- Do you need the first game? No. Firesprite calls it a standalone experience with a brand-new cast.[1]
- Deluxe worth it? Only for completionists; the content is costumes and a death gallery, not story.[2]
- Watching with friends: the series is a party favorite; check pre-launch coverage for a couch "pass the controller" mode, which hasn't been confirmed.
Long-term outlook
If Until Dawn 2 lands, Sony gets a repeatable horror franchise for its first-party lineup and a template for pairing an internal studio with outside writers. A weak reception would raise questions about running a narrative series without the original creators. Watch for a PC version later; Sony brought the Until Dawn remake to PC, so it wouldn't be surprising, but nothing has been announced.
Open questions
- How many endings and how many branches depend on relationships?
- Is there local multiplayer or a shared-choice mode?
- Is there a PS5 Pro enhancement or a 60fps mode?
- What is the "Diorama of Death" content exactly, and does it require completing every death?
